about THE ARTIST
Hi There!
I’m Heather jowett
a wedding photographer living and working in Detroit.
After twenty years photographing weddings in Detroit, I know that the best photographs are the ones that honor the truth of your connections, just as they are. Your wedding is not something to be performed or curated for content; it’s a community of loved ones coming together to create moments of pure presence, and it deserves to be documented with care and intention.
MY GOAL IS FOR YOU TO FEEL FULLY PRESENT. WITH GENTLE GUIDANCE AND A FOCUS ON AUTHENTICITY, TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE PHOTOGRAPHS THAT HONOR THE BEAUTY OF YOUR WEDDING DAY AS IT NATURALLY UNFOLDS.

the person
behind the lens
I photographed my first wedding when I was just 18, and 20 years later, I’m still hooked. My photography lives at the intersection of fine-art and documentary storytelling: honest moments that feel like memory itself. I’m here to create images that feel refined but relaxed, artful but deeply personal, the kind of photographs that will matter just as much in fifty years as they do the moment you receive them.
Detroit is home, and I bring that insider knowledge to every wedding I photograph, in the city: the pacing of a Saturday when the Tigers are playing, the hidden places off the beaten path, and the just right sun soaked corners of downtown that make for breathtaking portraits. In addition to photographing weddings, I’m also a stand-up comedian. So yes: I can photograph your wedding beautifully and make your stressed out mother laugh while I’m doing it. A gift.
Your wedding day isn’t a photo shoot, it’s a story unfolding and it deserves photographs that still feel alive and full of love decades from now. I’d be honored to help you create them.
What Inspires Me
The way I photograph a wedding is shaped by what I find beautiful, interesting, and true. These inspirations reflect the core of my creative process and the heart behind every photograph I take.
Capturing Unique Love Stories
I have always been drawn to the quiet poetry of love stories. Every couple brings their own history, their own inside jokes, their own way of seeing the world together, and I find endless inspiration in witnessing how those stories unfold. Weddings aren’t just events to me. They are a collection of meaningful choices, shared moments, and the small gestures that reveal who people are when they feel safe and loved. Photographing that truth is what keeps this work endlessly fresh and deeply gratifying. Each couple I work with brings their own history, their own rhythm, and their own version of what love looks like. My job is to honor that with images that feel true to who they are and what they mean to each other.
Timeless Beauty
I am endlessly inspired by the kind of beauty that never feels trendy or forced. The tastefully chosen details, the elegance of simple lines, the ways style and substance work together. My goal is always to create images that hold up years from now, the kind you can return to again and again without ever feeling dated. Timeless beauty is not about perfection. It is about honesty and understanding what moments deserve to be remembered. Your wedding photographs need to have a shelf life that will last generations. By looking for the timeless moments in your wedding day, I make sure they do just that.
Natural Light
Natural light has always been my favorite collaborator. There is something magical in how it shifts throughout the day, shaping tone, mood, and atmosphere in ways that can never be repeated or replicated. I love the challenge of working with whatever the day gives me, whether it is soft morning light, the golden warmth of sunset, or the dramatic shadows of an overcast afternoon. Natural light makes everything feel alive, and it allows the photographs to breathe with authenticity and depth.
While I prefer the honesty and beauty of natural light, I also know that every wedding has its own unique lighting needs. When the moment calls for it, I am equipped and ready to bring in additional light sources to ensure that your images are clear, flattering, and true to the atmosphere you’ve created. Whether it’s a dimly lit reception, a candlelit dinner, or an unexpected shift in weather, I have the tools and experience to make sure your photos still look beautiful and consistent.
Human Connection
Human connection is at the heart of everything I do. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in psychology, and that life experience has given me a deep appreciation for the ways people relate, communicate, and care for one another. That understanding shows up in my work, in the way I pay attention to subtle interactions, unspoken emotions, and the unique dynamics that make each relationship meaningful.
Outside of photography, performing standup comedy has taught me the joy of bringing people together, reading a room, and creating shared moments of understanding. All of that shapes the way I photograph weddings. I want people to feel comfortable, seen, and able to be themselves, because that is when the most genuine and memorable images are created.
